We have set up this area of our website specifically for you as the patient so that you can find answers to frequently asked questions about Nano-Cancer® therapy. Our goal is to briefly, but in detail, explain how treatment with Nano-Cancer® therapy works and how you can be admitted into our ongoing studies.
How does Nano-Cancer® therapy work?
Nano-Cancer® therapy is a new approach in the fight against cancer which was developed over the past 20 years. In this procedure, nanoparticles of iron oxide are introduced into the tumor and caused to vibrate from the outside without contact by means of an alternating magnetic field. This generates warmth which can be precisely regulated from the outside. Depending on the temperature reached (between 41°C and 70°C / 106°F and 158°F), the tumor cells are sensitized to accompanying radiation or chemotherapy, or irreparably damaged at higher temperatures. At this time, only solid tumors can be treated. The therapy has been in its clinical testing stage since 2003. Patients can receive treatment within the context of the ongoing clinical studies. More information about the therapy is available in our 3D animation (see the right-hand column) or under Nano-Cancer® therapy on our website.
Which tumor types are treated in the clinical studies?
Within the Phase II studies (efficacy studies), malignant brain tumors (glioblastoma multiforme) and prostate carcinomas with intermediate risk are being treated. Furthermore, within the context of various Phase I studies (feasibility studies), esophageal cancer and various local recurring or residual tumors are being treated. The current list with the status of the clinical testing is available in our study overview.
What costs are incurred when participating in a study?
Patients do not incur costs by participating in a study.
Where does the treatment take place?
Depending on the tumor type, the introduction of the nanoparticles takes place during a minimally invasive surgical procedure either at the Bundeswehr Hospital Berlin (brain tumor) or at the Charité Berlin/the outpatient surgical centre in the Ullsteinhaus, Berlin (prostate carcinoma).
What criteria must be fulfilled for study participation?
Each study has its own very narrow inclusion and exclusion criteria. These can be found on our website under each individual study description (see: Study Overview). If you have further questions, our study coordinator Dr. Burghard Thiesen would be happy to advise you and provide help. However, the decision to participate in the clinical studies should always be discussed with your treating physician.
